Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
