American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It led several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
