Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
