Cameron Norrie earned the most notable win of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph signifies Norrie's initial win over a reigning world number one.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who joins as the newest UK male player in history to beat a world No 1. "Returning from health issues last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant success of my tennis journey, my first win over the global number one and probably the most confident competitor in the world right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive Masters 1000 victories, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Match Breakdown

The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, Norrie steadily worked himself into the match by serving with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into extended, grueling points. His relentless consistency and dependability steadily took its toll.

Through most of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked notably uneasy executing his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, physicality and penetration the entire contest while serving efficiently and picking his spots to move forward and attack well.

In the tight closing stages, the British competitor superbly maintained his calm to overcome the best player in the game.
