The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
