The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
