The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
