The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative familiar with the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the morning session finished without tangible results, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future administration of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to finish in return for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"We are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated additional victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, health workers stated.
