The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense of him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of radical love focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been inspired to see the persistent defiance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has been great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections.
