Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
